Part-Time Work Rules
International students in Germany can work 120 full days or 240 half days per year without a work permit. A half day is defined as up to 4 hours of work. Working as a student assistant (HiWi) at the university does not count toward this limit. If students wish to work beyond these limits, they need approval from the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) and the foreigners’ authority.
Post-Study Work Visa
After graduation, international students can apply for an 18-month job-seeker visa to find employment related to their degree. During this period, students can work in any job to support themselves. Once a suitable job is found, students can switch to an EU Blue Card or a work residence permit. Germany’s strong economy and demand for STEM professionals make it an attractive destination for long-term career growth.
